Why Choose Implant Dentures?
In the past, patients who’ve opted for dentures usually get traditional dentures, the removable appliance that replaces missing teeth. However, for those patients missing all of their teeth, implant-supported dentures can give you a complete smile without dealing with the uncomfortable movement and slippage of regular dentures.
What Are Implant Dentures?
Implant dentures sometimes referred to as mini dental implants, are a series of small titanium posts that are implanted into the bone of the missing teeth’ sockets to take the place of missing tooth roots. By replacing the tooth roots the implant-supported dentures also preserve facial bone.
Implant Denture Treatment
We will first surgically implant the series of metal posts into your jaw. Over the course of two to six months, a process known as osseointegration will occur, in which the bone and tissue surrounding the implants will begin to bond with the posts to create a sturdy foundation from which to hold your dentures. While this process is occurring, the patient will be fitted with temporary teeth.
Once this first step is complete, we will then attach abutments to the implants, which will connect the implants to the artificial teeth. This second step requires a couple of weeks for the patient to heal before completing the final treatment step.
The third and final step requires attaching the full dentures to the implants by way of the abutments. It may take the patient a few days to get used to the new implant-supported dentures; however, chewing and speaking will be completely restored after this procedure.
Benefits of Implant-Supported Dentures
Besides the preservation of bone, which helps maintain a healthy facial structure, implants offer an aesthetic appeal over conventional dentures. The implants ensure that your dentures do not move around while speaking or chewing, so you won’t have to worry about slippage or discomfort. You’ll be able to enjoy a normal bite without concern for your dentures, which also means eating what you want without restriction. Furthermore, patients will no longer have to worry about ill-fitting dentures or denture adhesives.
